Cub User – Case Studies

Cub Wheelchair by Participant Assistive Products

Supportive tilt & space wheelchairs users have many challenges with cost, transport, durability, future growth and useability in both urban & rural settings. Affordability is also a major barrier for many families. The Cub wheelchair recently developed by Participant Assistive Products opens up new possibilities for outdoor adventures alongside day to day use in an urban environment.

The Cub Wheelchair is a foldable, lightweight, and durable paediatric wheelchair with tilt and recline functionality. Designed to grow with children, its adjustable hip guides and backrest promote healthy posture and comfort. The wheelchair is ideal for mobility support, offering a tilt range from -9° to 45° and an adjustable recline for rest or daily tasks. The Cub includes a contour cushion, activity tray, and repair kit, while the optional flip-down abductor and all-terrain accessory provide added versatility. Its foldable design allows for easy portability in cars and planes, ensuring mobility without compromising comfort.

Meet Cole

Cole is a cheerful young boy living with his mother, Brenda, in the remote coastal community of Tahsis, British Columbia. Cole has a rare chromosomal deletion disorder and is non-verbal, relying entirely on a wheelchair for mobility. He enjoys the outdoors and the beautiful landscapes of his community.

The Cub wheelchair, equipped with an all-terrain front wheel accessory, has made a significant difference for Cole and his mother. This feature allows Cole to navigate the trails, meadows, and shorelines around their home, something that was difficult with his everyday wheelchair funded by the British Columbian government.

Meet Alice

Alice is a young Ukrainian-Canadian girl diagnosed with CASK Disease, a rare neurological disorder affecting her brain development. This condition severely impacts her motor skills, making it difficult for her to walk and communicate. Alice relies on mobility aids like gait trainers and the Cub wheelchair. Recently, she was also diagnosed with epilepsy, which has added daily seizures to her challenges. Despite these difficulties, Alice remains a joyful, social, and spirited girl who loves music, reading, and spending time outdoors.

Cub is Alice’s first wheelchair, transitioning from a paediatric stroller provided by the British Columbia provincial government. According to her mother, Roxanne, the Cub wheelchair has been instrumental in allowing Alice to access her community, safely eat, and attend her specialized physiotherapy sessions. These therapies had required an airplane flight but are now closer to home. The Cub’s transportability has been a game-changer for Alice’s family, making these car and plane journeys more manageable.
